LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 48-year-old former Las Vegas kindergarten teacher identified himself as the boyfriend of a 16-year-old girl he is accused of keeping in his apartment for nine weeks, and told a Nevada jury he was afraid she’d kill herself if he took her home.
Melvyn Perry Sprowson Jr. testified Wednesday in his trial on kidnapping, child abuse and child pornography charges that could put him in prison for the rest of his life.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2nk5jtU ) that Sprowson wiped tears from his cheeks and said he cared for the girl to the best of his ability.
Serving as his own lawyer, Sprowson told the state court jury that he feared arrest, so he lied to school authorities and police about the girl’s whereabouts four separate times.
