LAS VEGAS (AP) - Fire investigators think careless smoking may have sparked a wind-whipped fire that consumed a northwestern Las Vegas apartment building and left more than 40 people without a place to live.
No injuries were reported, and officials say residents tried to quell flames with fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived just after 10:30 a.m. Monday to find a large section of the 16-unit building ablaze.
Multiple alarms brought several waves of firefighters to the two-story building at Washington Avenue near Rainbow Boulevard, but it was a total loss.
Damage was estimated at $1 million.
The American Red Cross helped people displaced by the fire, and opened a nearby community center to provide shelter.
