The ongoing brouhaha about whether President Trump or his associates have been in cahoots with Vladimir Putin or Mr. Putin’s thugs will never be settled to the satisfaction of some Democrats. It is possible to find evidence that something is true, but it is much harder to prove that something is not true. Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell of the House Intelligence Committee are true believers who will not be satisfied by lack of evidence. Other members of the committee may also be true believers. To these individuals, the absence of evidence that the Trump people conspired to work with the Russians confirms their beliefs because only a conspiracy would be able to conceal such evidence. True believers simply cannot accept that they might be wrong. This unfortunate situation precludes them working together honestly with those who do not share their beliefs and often leads them to refuse to participate in an investigation.
