AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s hunting season for chasing wild hares is coming to a close for the year.

The state has a season for hunting snowshoe hares that runs from Oct. 1 to March 31. It’s one the latest of the winter hunts.

Hunters are allowed to take four hares per day. They are valued by hunters because they are elusive and difficult to track down.

Maine is home to two rabbit-like species, the snowshoe hare and the New England cottontail. Only the cottontail is a true rabbit, and it is listed on the state’s endangered species list.

Snowshoe hares are larger, with longer ears and feet. Snowshoes turn white during the winter; cottontails do not.

The next major hunting season in Maine is the spring turkey hunt, which starts in late April.
