PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state is offering $1.9 million in grants to help local businesses reduce diesel emissions from their fleets.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said Friday it’s now accepting proposals.

The grants are available under the state’s Clean Diesel Fund.

The General Assembly established the fund last year to reduce emissions from heavy-duty diesel vehicles. This is the first round of grants offered under the new program.

DEM says the funding can be used to replace vehicles and replace or upgrade transport refrigeration units. Also, converting vehicles to clean alternative fuel and other steps needed to improve fuel efficiency or decrease emissions are covered.

A workshop on the application process will be held April 4 at the Rhode Island Trucking Association in Pawtucket.

The application deadline is May 9.
