AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Energy says Savannah River Site’s managing contractor must rehire an employee wrongfully fired in 2015 for cooperating with government investigators.

The Aiken Standard reports (https://bit.ly/2nm89lg ) Savannah River Nuclear Solutions also must pay Sandra Black nearly $372,000 in back pay, benefits and damages.

The company said in a statement Black will return to work April 1 as manager of its “employee concerns program,” which looks into complaints.

The federal agency determined last month Black was fired in January 2015 for cooperating with an investigation into potential whistleblower protection violations. The ruling says an employee had complained in 2014 about the handling of chemicals.

The company continues to deny Black’s firing was related to that review.

She had worked at the former nuclear weapons facility since 1980.
