NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A student at a Newport News elementary school has been suspended after officials say he brought a knife onto a school bus.

Newport News Public Schools spokeswoman Michelle Price tells news outlets that the 9-year-old boy carried a pocket knife on a bus Monday morning and showed it to several students. No one was hurt. Police say the boy attends Dutrow Elementary School.

Price says other students told faculty at the school about the knife, which was confiscated.

Police spokesman Harold Eley says the student’s parents were notified and the child was suspended with a recommendation for long-term suspension.

Price said the school’s principal would be sending a note out to parents on Tuesday about what happened.
