TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Tempe Town lake is closed to boating and other water activities indefinitely because upstream water releases of runoff into the Salt River are carrying floating debris through the lake.

The city says public park areas around the lake remain open and that the lake itself will reopen to the public once the debris has passed.

The Salt River Project in mid-February began releasing low levels of water from two reservoirs on the Verde River, which flows into the Salt River near Fountain Hills on the eastern outskirts of the Phoenix metro area.

The SRP is releasing water to create additional storage capacity in reservoirs for additional runoff.
