WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Novant Health Inc. has raised its hourly wage to what’s called a living wage as one way to attract and retain qualified workers.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2lwi9V7) that Novant says Wednesday that the hourly wage for about 2,000 employees in North Carolina was raised to $11 an hour on Feb. 19. That equates to $22,800 a year.

Previously, some employees were paid the minimum wage of $7.25, or $15,080 a year.

Novant’s chief human resources officer says the living-wage initiative represents a $1.2 million expense in fiscal 2017.

The living wage scale set by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology says an $11 hourly wage in North Carolina is 47 cents above the recommended rate for the state for one adult.
