WINTHROP, Mass. (AP) - Fire officials in Massachusetts are investigating after three people died in three separate house fires in a 24-hour span.
The most recent was a man who died in an early Saturday morning fire in Winthrop. The victim, who was in his 60s, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he later died. Officials have not yet released his name. They say the cause of the blaze is under investigation but it appears accidental. One person managed to escape the house.
The state Department of Fire Services says there have now been 24 fire-related fatalities this year.
That includes a woman who died in Bourne Friday afternoon that also hasn’t been identified, as well as Watertown firefighter Joseph Toscano, who collapsed while battling a fire Friday morning and later died.
