SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The family of Utah man who was fatally shot by law officers in the high desert about 60 miles east of the Nevada line had a history of mental illness.
Tooele County Sheriff Paul Wimmer says 36-year old Michael Zumwalt of West Valley City threatened to blow up a hazardous waste disposal facility near Interstate 80 before he was killed over the weekend.
He says a sheriff’s deputy and a highway patrolman responded to reports of an armed man at the Clean Harbors Incineration Facility at Aragonite at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday.
Zumwalt was a U.S. Navy veteran who had worked as a truck driver and attended Elko High School in Nevada.
His ex-wife, Eliza Spears, told the Desert News Tuesday (https://tinyurl.com/j4wndfd) he was bipolar and delusional. His father, Don Zumwalt, says he was literally “out of his mind.”
