HALLOWELL, Maine (AP) - Several Maine communities will benefit from almost $2 million in federal money that is being dedicated to help pay for hazardous site cleanups.
The Environmental Protection Agency grants will be applied to a host of sites around the state. The money will assist with the cleanup and redevelopment of industrial sites.
Hallowell is slated to receive a grant of $300,000. U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree says some money will be a community-wide hazardous substances grant that will be used to conduct site assessments and develop cleanup plans.
In Berwick, money will be used to clean up the Prime Tanning Company’s Blue Sort Building. The site was a tannery for more than 75 years.
Other recipients include Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the city of Bangor.
