ELKRIDGE, Md. (AP) - Several amateur radio operators in Maryland took part in a 24-hour national preparedness drill.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the operators set up a shop Saturday at two different locations in Howard County.

They used Ham radios and Morse code to communicate with other radio operators around the country. Amateur radios can be used in emergencies when modern communication devices like cell phones may not work.

Club member Tom Christovich said about 30,000 ham radio operators from around the country took part in the drill, which was sponsored by the American Radio Relay League.
