GORHAM, N.H. (AP) - All-terrain vehicles are getting the road to the Northeast’s highest peak almost to themselves.
The Mount Washington Auto Road was open only to ATVs on Saturday, aside from the usual guided tours in Auto Road vans. ATV riders had to purchase tickets in advance.
Vehicles will be required to travel single file, at maximum speeds of 25 mph.
The event was founded in 2000 by Gerry Pomerleau, a retired firefighter from Dracut, Massachusetts, and past director of the NH ATV Club. He died in 2011, and the ride is now named the Gerry Pomerleau Memorial Ride in his honor.
