PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Board of Elections is asking the state attorney general to investigate possible campaign finance violations by a longtime state lawmaker.
Rep. Anastasia Williams, a Providence Democrat, said in the State House on Thursday that she’s “not at all” concerned about it.
The elections board voted Wednesday night to refer the case to the office of Democratic state Attorney General Peter Kilmartin. The board hasn’t publicly specified its concerns about Williams, which were discussed in closed meetings before the vote.
Williams says she didn’t know ahead of time about the Wednesday vote or that she could have gone to a hearing to address the concerns. She declined further comment.
Williams was first elected in 1992. She won re-election last year after a hard-fought Democratic primary.
