Whoopi Goldberg of ABC’s “The View” told her co-hosts Wednesday that she refuses to consider Georgia’s special election results a loss for the Democratic Party.
Republican Karen Handel defeated her Democrat challenger Jon Ossoff with 52 percent of suburban Atlanta voters Tuesday night. While comedian Joy Behar said Democrats should be worried that their strategy has not materialized a single victory since President Trump’s election, Ms. Goldberg took a different approach.
“You can say it’s a loss; I don’t see it that way,” she said. “I see that Democrats are coming out. And they’re not coming out in perhaps the numbers you want them to come out in. … I’m saying I’m not looking at this as a loss. I’m looking at it as slow progress.”
The show’s audience applauded the analysis before Jedediah Bila weighed in.
“The thing that concerns me is that I don’t see a clear message,” Ms. Bila said. “I think a lot of voters in that area of the country that didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton felt the same way.”
“Bernie Sanders had a clear message — he just didn’t get the nomination,” countered Ms. Behar.
The comedian told her co-hosts earlier in the segment that focusing on Mr. Trump may not be enough to woo voters over to the Democratic Party’s camp.
“If you’re using Donald Trump as your basis for your campaign, I don’t know if it’s working,” Ms. Behar said, the Washington Free Beacon reported. “I don’t think people are going towards the Democrats in enough numbers at this point, and it’s a problem.”
