FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana woman who was driving 142 mph when she caused a fatal crash has pleaded guilty but mentally ill.
Thirty-eight-year-old Stacey R. Motz-Altman’s trial had been scheduled for September. She pleaded guilty but mentally ill last week to reckless homicide and criminal recklessness.
The Journal Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/2tgHiId ) that an Allen County judge will sentence the Winona Lake woman on July 31.
Police say Motz-Altman was driving east on U.S. 30 last September at 142 mph when she rear-ended a car and pushed it into the rear of a semi-trailer.
The car’s driver, 54-year-old Luann Simon, was pinned inside her vehicle’s wreckage and later died.
Court records state that police determined Motz-Altman’s speed at the time of the crash from her seat belt control module.
