SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The superintendent of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield has retired, and the National Park Service is seeking a replacement.

The State Journal-Register reports (https://bit.ly/2sjPHKT ) Dale Phillips took over the site preserving Abraham Lincoln’s former home in 2010. He has worked for more than 40 years for the National Park Service, which operates the site.

The 61-year-old says he’s been thinking about retiring for a while. He plans to move to Arkansas to be closer to family. Phillips also may start a tour business focused on Civil War battlefields.

The site includes the home Lincoln left in 1861 to serve as the country’s 16th president.

In 2016, attendance at the site topped 300,000 for the first time in seven years.
