RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia man convicted of killing his 3-week-old son has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Richmond Times Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/2rrIxHb ) that 21-year-old David Anthony Gans was sentenced Wednesday for second-degree murder. He entered an Alford plea in March.

Gans told officials he was caring for the baby at his sister’s home when he discovered that the child was not breathing. Officials said the child had multiple blunt-force injuries, including a fractured skull and fractured ribs.

Hopewell Circuit Judge W. Allan Sharrett said the “shocking number of injuries” indicates the child suffered deliberate and continuous abuse. The judge called it “one of the more disturbing cases this court has ever encountered.”

Gans apologized in court, saying he needs to “live with the consequences.”
