CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Wildlife officials say more people have applied to hunt alligators this year in South Carolina, compared with previous years.
The Department of Wildlife and Natural Resources says nearly 4,900 have applied for a license to hunt alligators this year. That’s up from about 4,600 people last year.
State biologist Jay Butfiloski told The Post and Courier of Charleston (https://bit.ly/2tm7QqP) that he expects to get more than 5,000 applications by Thursday’s deadline.
The alligator hunting season begins Sept. 9 and runs to Oct. 14.
The General Assembly decided in 2008 to allow alligator hunting.
Officials said nearly 400 alligators were taken last year.
Licensees are selected in a lottery draw and those selected will be notified in mid-July. The application fee is $10 and the license costs $100.
