SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder has officially been hired as police chief in the Utah tourist town of Moab.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2ssKOSA) that the Moab City Council agreed to increase the base annual salary to as much as $150,000, which is close to Winder’s Salt Lake County salary of nearly $152,000.

Winder has said he decided to leave after being worn down by a series of unconnected officer deaths as well as issues with jail overcrowding and disagreements over homelessness in downtown Salt Lake City.

Winder is expected to start July 1.
