AVALON, N.J. (AP) - A shuttered bridge that connects two New Jersey shore towns could soon be reopened.
The Townsends Inlet toll bridge has been closed since April due to a crack in one of its supporting piers. It’s a major thoroughfare that connects Sea Isle City and Avalon.
Officials had hoped to have the bridge reopened by Memorial Day. But those plans were postponed when workers encountered an obstruction while installing a bridge pile.
Crews have been addressing several defects on the three-pile cluster at the Avalon end of the bridge, with workers making repairs 20 feet below the surface.
Cape May County officials say they hope to reopen the bridge by month’s end, but a specific date has not been determined.
