LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - A popular state-owned beach in the southeastern Adirondacks that has been plagued by sewage contamination will open to the public after tests showed the water is safe.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says the Lake George Million Dollar Beach will open Sunday.

The agency says E. coli counts have fallen and are now within state Health Department guidelines.

DEC had said earlier it would have to delay opening the beach for the season.

The agency says recent rainfall may have contributed to the presence of E. coli. It’s trying to track down the source to prevent future contamination.

Officials closed down the beach last August due to bacteria and determined it was from human waste, but the source of the sewage remained unknown.
