SALEM, Mass. (AP) - Authorities in Massachusetts say a 10-year-old boy who was trying to cross tracks to get his bike was hit and killed by a commuter rail train.

The Essex County District Attorney’s office says the boy was killed Friday night in Salem.

Authorities say the boy had been with a group of other boys at a nearby park when he tried to cross the tracks. An outbound train passed just after 8 p.m. and then an inbound train went by about a minute later.

Investigators believe the boy was not aware of the second train and was struck by it. He died of his injuries.

Authorities will not be releasing the boy’s identity.

This story has been corrected to show that the boy is 10 years old, not 11, as authorities originally stated.
