VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A small plane that may have broken up in flight crashed near a Southern California beach on Thursday, killing one person, authorities said.
A body was found in the cockpit of the wrecked plane, which went down shortly before noon northwest of Ventura near Solimar Beach, Ventura County fire spokesman Steve Swindle said.
Witnesses reported seeing pieces of the plane fall from the sky along U.S. 101, KEYT-TV (https://bit.ly/2rpMpW8 ) reported. There was no fire.
The plane’s fuselage landed on an oil production site on top of a hill. What appeared to be a wing section landed below the hill.
The type of aircraft and the number of people aboard were not immediately known, Swindle said.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
The crash happened about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
