Actress Chloe Grace Moretz took to Twitter Wednesday to condemn the advertising campaign for an animated feature film that she stars in.
Titled “Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs,” the cartoon, “a retelling of the Snow White fairy tale, was hyped at the Cannes Film Festival with a poster depicting a tall, thin heroine standing next to a shorter, heavier version of herself,” Entertainment Weekly explains.
The promotional poster’s tagline reads, “What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 Dwarfs not so short?”
“I have now fully reviewed the mkting for Red Shoes, I am just as appalled and angry as everyone else, this wasn’t approved by me or my team,” Ms. Moretz, who voices Snow White in the cartoon, tweeted Tuesday. “Pls know I have let the producers of the film know. I lent my voice to a beautiful script that I hope you will all see in its entirety[.]”
The day prior, Tess Holliday, who describes herself on her website as a “Plus Size Model & Body Positivity Ambassador,” tweeted to Ms. Moretz about the ad campaign, complaining, “How did this get approved by an entire marketing team? Why is it okay to tell young kids being fat = ugly?”
According to promotional materials for the project, the movie concept revolves around the Snow White character being a short, stocky young woman who magically transforms into a skinnier, taller version of herself whenever she is wearing a pair of magical red shoes.
Snow White “wants to stay true to herself but Fairy Tale Island is all about looks,” explains the official website for the movie by South Korean production studio Locus. Of course, in the movie Snow White eventually learns to “let the beauty within … shine brighter than anyone else in the land.”
“The actual story is powerful for young women and resonated with me,” Ms. Moretz said on Twitter Wednesday. “I am sorry for the offense that was beyond my creative control.”
