SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) - The trees are cleared on the site of Seaside School District’s next campus.
The Daily Astorian reports (https://bit.ly/2sH7EGP ) the new campus sits about 250 feet (76 meters) above sea level with a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. But this breathtaking scenery isn’t why the district moved.
The new campus will better protect staff and students from potential earthquakes and tsunamis.
The district has been working to move its campus to higher ground for about 30 years. The property is part of an 80-acre (324,000-square-meter) site gifted to the school district by forest products company Weyerhaeuser.
The district will proceed with architectural designs and soil surveys now that trees have been cleared.
Seaside School District Superintendent-emeritus Doug Dougherty says there has been no evidence of landslides in four years on the hillside.
