DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) - A teen’s hand was severely injured when officials say a firework exploded in a Maryland backyard on the Fourth of July.
Prince George’s County fire officials said in a statement that medics were called to Addison Road in District Heights late Tuesday for a report of an injury. Officials say it appears the teen was handling fireworks when one exploded. He was taken to a trauma center.
The fire marshal’s office is investigating. All consumer-purchased and backyard style fireworks are illegal in the county and penalties can include fines or jail time.
Fire Chief Benjamin Barksdale says the primary concern is for the teen’s health, but officials can’t “look the other way when a law designed to prevent this type of life-changing injury is violated.”
