Mostly good weather has brought a bumper crop of tourists - and vehicles - to Maine for the extended Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The Maine Turnpike Authority projected a modest increase in traffic on the order of 1.25 percent. All told, more than 615,000 vehicles were anticipated to have traveled the Maine Turnpike between Friday and Saturday alone.
Turnpike Authority spokeswoman Erin Courtney said the way the holiday falls on a Tuesday is extending the weekend, and changing the flow of traffic.
From January through May, the turnpike has seen a 2.4 percent growth in traffic compared to the same period last year. And 2016 marked the busiest year in Maine Turnpike history.
