BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore school bus system audit requested in the wake of a deadly crash hasn’t yet begun.

State education officials tell the Baltimore Sun they will soon begin requesting bids from auditors.

In April, federal investigators requested an urgent audit of the system to screen city school bus drivers in response to a deadly school bus crash Nov. 1 in southwest Baltimore. No students were on the bus, but the driver and five passengers on a Maryland Transit Administration bus were killed.

Investigators found fault with the state Department of Education’s system for gathering safety records that could disqualify school bus drivers. The system would be the subject of the audit.

Attorney Hassan Murphy, who represents victims in the crash, says the fact that the audit hasn’t begun is “unacceptable.”
