HODGES, S.C. (AP) - A main rural highway in Greenwood County has been closed by South Carolina transportation officials after sinkholes appeared on the approach to a bridge over railroad tracks.
Department of Transportation officials say in a press release that a detour has been set up. Agency data shows the U.S. Highway 178 bridge near Hodges north of Greenwood carries about 4,200 vehicles a day.
SCDOT engineer Ryan Balentine told The Index-Journal of Greenwood the sinkholes were likely caused by water damage to a wall on a bridge. One sinkhole appears to be 10 feet (3 meters) deep.
Balentine says crews hope to reopen the bridge by the end of the week.
