STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi official is resigning after pleading guilty to possessing methamphetamine.

Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Glenn Hamilton pleaded to the felony charge Monday in Clay County Circuit Court.

The Commercial Dispatch reports 61-year-old Hamilton was sentenced to one year of supervised probation. He was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $500 in restitution to the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. He was arrested on the charge in June 2016.

The Republican has been circuit clerk since 2012.

He was a state senator from 1996 to 2004. He also served on the Mississippi Parole Board from 2004 to 2008, appointed by then-Gov. Haley Barbour.

Hamilton’s attorney, Rod Ray of Columbus, says if Hamilton meets all probation standards, the conviction will be removed from his record in a year.
