PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island has kicked off its summer meals program.

First Gentleman Andy Moffit and Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Ken Wagner launched this year’s Summer Food Service Program in Central Falls this week.

Meals are provided for free to children in needy areas after school has ended for the year.

More than 400,000 meals were served last summer.

Moffit says kids need access to good, nutritious food to be at their best.

Communities where half of the students are eligible for free and reduced price lunch can participate.

To find a summer meals site, families can visit the Rhode Island Department of Education website or call 2-1-1.

Wagner says the program has grown significantly in recent years, with participation increasing by more than 50 percent since 2013.
