PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - The Petersburg City Council has picked a new mayor to lead the cash-strapped city.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (goo.gl/FW7EWr) the council voted 4 to 3 Tuesday to elevate Vice Mayor Samuel Parham to mayor.

Some critics of the city’s leadership have tried to remove Parham and current Mayor W. Howard Myers from office. Petersburg is millions of dollars in debt and has had to cut city employees’ pay, slash school spending and take other move to stabilize its finances.

Myers is currently vice president of Colonial Cleaning Service in Petersburg.
