BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - City officials in Bethlehem are honoring a newspaper carrier who alerted authorities last week to a gas leak he noticed in the early morning hours.

The Express-Times of Easton says (https://bit.ly/2jb2X30 ) Mayor Bob Donchez on Tuesday thanked David Buss for his quick thinking in calling 911 after he heard the hissing of a leaking line and smelled the odor of gas at around 3 a.m. on Dec. 28.

Buss delivers the Easton paper and The Morning Call of Allentown.

The mayor says Buss’ actions may have averted a catastrophe.

Emergency responders found a growing sinkhole, along with leaks from a water main and gas line.

More than 20 homes were evacuated, and a gas company worker was hurt when he fell into the expanding sinkhole.
