MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont and seven other states are offering snow goose hunts this spring to reduce the ever-growing population of geese that officials say is harming habitat.
The season runs from March 11 through April 28 and the daily bag limit is 15 snow geese.
A spring snow goose harvest permit as well as a hunting license is required. The permit is available for free at the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department’s website at www.vtfishandwildlife.com .
Officials say the breeding snow goose population has grown from about 50,000 birds in the mid-1960s to 915,000 birds today, resulting in damage to agricultural crops and marsh vegetation from Quebec to North Carolina.
In addition to Vermont, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia are also holding hunts.
