The house depicted on the early seasons of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” as the location of protagonist Mary Richards’ 3rd floor apartment is up for sale. It can be yours for just under $1.7 million, lifestyle website RealSimple.com reported Wednesday.

“While the interiors of Mary’s apartment were filmed on a Hollywood soundstage, the exterior shots were filmed at a home in Minneapolis, Minnesota,” Real Simple explained of the 9,500-square-foot residence.

While the property looked a bit on the dumpy side in exterior shots filmed in the 1970s, subsequent owners appear to have spruced it up quite a bit in the 47 years since, judging by the photos at Real Simple.

“Inside there’s an expansive kitchen with stainless appliances, two laundry rooms, and a master bedroom suite with a sitting room, walk-in closet, and spa bath,” noted Real Simple. “Other features include five fireplaces, a turreted home office, exercise and weight rooms, a sauna, and a screened porch. Design enthusiasts will also appreciate the ornate Victorian millwork, bay windows, leaded glass transom accents, and a beautiful wooden staircase.”

Of course, owning a house that TV made famous can have its drawbacks.

As HookedonHouses.net once noted, the owners at the time of the show’s initial run “got so tired of drive-by gawkers when the show was in its heyday that they hung an ’IMPEACH NIXON’ sign across the front of the house so the show couldn’t shoot new exterior shots to use in later seasons.”
