DETROIT (AP) - The Civic Optimist Club of Detroit is seeking students younger than 18 to take part in a local essay contest.

Organizers say essays will be judged based on the theme: “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges.” The top prize winner will compete at the district level for college scholarships.

The deadline is Feb. 12.

Club president Arthur Edge says the contest gives students “a wonderful opportunity to tap into their creativity and pursue possible scholarships at the same time.”

The Civic Optimist Club of Detroit is participating for the first time in the Optimist International Essay Contest. The international service club organization has more than 90,000 members in clubs throughout the world.
