NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey’s consumer affairs division cited 136 home improvement contractors in 2016, resulting in $1.9 million in restitution and penalties.

Restitution sought ranged from $250 to more than $134,000. Camden County had the most notices of violations with 17. No notices were issued in Mercer and Warren counties.

The state has filed six civil actions against home improvement contractors for allegedly defrauding more than 100 consumers who hired them to repair or rebuild storm-damaged homes. That includes 99 homeowners who lost more than $3.8 million in federal relief funds.

The complaints, filed in Ocean and Atlantic counties, allege the contractors engaged in various unconscionable consumer practices that included taking money from consumers and failing to repair, rebuild or elevate storm-damaged homes.
