MONROE, La. (AP) - The Monroe Fire Department has named its first female captain.

Local news outlets report that Firefighter Sabrina January was appointed to the position Monday. January joined the department in 2001 and was one of three who became the first female firefighters in the city.

Chief Terry Williams said he has watched January grow in the department through her role as a driver and, later, as acting captain. She received a pin denoting her promotion and a red helmet to use at fire scenes.

In the position of captain, January will be responsible for a firetruck, a fire crew, fire scenes and any type of hazardous condition encountered on a call.

January says she is looking forward to her new role and acknowledged her fellow firefighters, friends and family for their support.
