LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - The Cowlitz County Hearing Examiner is taking testimony as he decides a key permit for a $1 billion methanol plant at the Port of Kalama in southwest Washington.
Three days of public hearings begin Monday at the Cowlitz Regional Conference Center in Longview.
The Port of Kalama and China-based Northwest Innovation Works have applied for the shoreline development permit. The facility would convert natural gas to methanol, which would then be shipped to China to make plastics and other consumer goods.
The Longview Daily News says proponents of the methanol plant are hosting a rally Monday in support of the project. Meanwhile, opponents plan to gather at a park and release an injured eagle back into the wild to remind decision makers of the effects fossil fuel projects can have on wildlife and the environment.
