JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Southern State University in Joplin is receiving a $1 million donation for the establishment of scholarships over the next decade.

The Joplin Globe (https://bit.ly/2ikdaIy ) reports Debra and David Humphreys of Joplin are the donors. Recipients of the Debra and David Humphreys Excellence Award must be graduates of high schools within 50 miles of the university. They must major in biological and physical sciences, mathematics, education, accounting, finance, engineering technology or computer science.

The scholarship will cover at least half of student’s tuition for the school year.

University president Alan Marble says the scholarships will be awarded based on both merit and financial need. More than 40 scholarships could be awarded each academic year.
