CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - Horry County Council has decided against requiring bars to close at 2 a.m.
Local media outlets reported that the council decided Tuesday that county officials will more closely review requests by new bar owners to stay open between midnight and 6 a.m.
Council Chairman Mark Lazarus says the more detailed reviews will improve safety in late-might businesses.
Bar owners and people who go to bars late at night had complained about a proposal to shut them down by 2 a.m. to improve safety in the area. Many of those opposed to the idea work late-night shifts in the service industry and then want to go have a drink.
Existing bars and new establishments must submit safety plans on how they will eliminate criminal activity and prevent service to underage patrons.
