MAGNOLIA, Miss. (AP) - The Magnolia City Council has killed a deal that would have replaced 915 water meters in the city after learning that most of the water meters don’t need replacing.
The McComb Enterprise-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2iFNlQQ) the move at Tuesday’s meeting also eliminates the need for an $800,000 bond issue to pay for the equipment. The contract with a utility company died after officials learned that just 213 meters need to be replaced.
Officials say the problem wasn’t broken water meters, but instead was a meter reader who was improperly reporting working meters as broken. The employee has been fired.
Officials started looking at purchasing new water meters after an audit showed that city water customers were using 2 million gallons, but the city was only collecting bills for 1 million gallons.
