Last May I heard that the United States was embarking on a $1-trillion, 30-year “modernization” of our nuclear arsenal, yet there has been barely a word about it from the mainstream press. Then, as noted by Rowan Scarborough recently, the Pentagon laid out the Obama administration’s plan for the $450-billion, 20-year plan to “modernize our strategic deterrence capabilities … ” (“Obama already set to spend $20B a year to update U.S. nukes,” Web, Dec. 23). This could have been construed as a weapons build-up, yet again, there was neither front-page reporting of it nor any mention of President Obama’s forging ahead with a new strategic bomber, a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or other missile programs.

However, last week President-elect Trump stated that the United States must “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability,” which would essentially perpetuate the Obama nuclear ’legacy.’ Mr. Trump’s statement sent the left and its supporting cast in the press into a frenzy. I initially found this reaction striking, but then realized it is just another chapter in the left’s hypocrisy-101 playbook. This one ranks right up there with Hillary Clinton assuming the presidential election was hers, condemning Mr. Trump for stating he “would not blindly accept the election results” and calling Mr. Trump’s position “horrifying” and a “threat to our democratic process.”

And we all remember her reaction after her devastating loss.
