LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man suspected of firing a bullet into the air that wounded a 12-year-old girl in Norwalk last November has been sentenced to 52 months in prison.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said Thursday that a detective investigating a separate Norwalk shooting last month acted on a hunch that led to the arrest of 35-year-old Andres Ruiz.

A department statement said the caliber of bullet, the proximity of the gunfire, and the time of the January incident led the detective to think of the injured girl.

The girl survived but suffered wounds to her forehead, eyebrow and eyelid.

Ruiz has since pleaded no contest to charges including of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner.

He was sentenced Feb. 2.
