MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - The Berkeley County School District has fired its chief financial officer during an investigation of possible misuse of funds.

Local media outlets reported that 60-year-old Brantley D. Thomas III was fired Tuesday by school superintendent Brenda Blackburn.

School officials have not said how much money is missing.

Thomas had worked for the district since 1993 and oversaw all of the district’s money, including its nearly $260 million general fund.

No charges have been filed while the investigation continues.

Thomas’ lawyer, Matt Hubbell, said he could not talk about the matter. He says Thomas is cooperating with authorities.

School officials were told about the investigation by the FBI and Wells Fargo bank on Monday. School board members would not talk about the investigation.
