FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Fort Smith’s Board of Directors has terminated the city’s contract with two partners to construct a softball sports complex.

The Southwest Times Record (https://bit.ly/2k2Q2Rs ) reports the directors’ decision was due to Republican state Sen. Jake Files and Sebastian County Election Commissioner Lee Webb failing to meet deadlines in the development of the River Valley Sports Complex since its approval in 2014.

City administrator Carl Geffken recommended the city end its agreement with Files and Webb at a Jan. 31 study session.

The city pledged to pay $1.6 million and has already paid $1.08 million. It’ll only seek a reimbursement of nearly $27,000 in grant money given to River Valley Sports Complex.

Files previously said in a statement that while he and Webb wished to continue developing the project, they would honor the directors’ decision.
