WHITE OAK, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania medical examiner has ruled accidental the deaths of an elderly woman and a young child in an apartment building fire in suburban Pittsburgh.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said 83-year-old Anita Clark and 4-year-old Azire Clark-Roberts were both killed by inhalation and thermal injuries during Tuesday afternoon’s blaze in White Oak.

Police officers said they tried to get inside the apartment when they responded to the fire but were driven back by high heat and smoke. Firefighters later found the two victims.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities said the Red Cross was assisting residents of five apartments believed to have sustained some sort of damage.
