LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - One of two inmates who escaped from a Lincoln prison has been sentenced to 50 to 80 more years behind bars.
Armon Dixon, 37, pleaded no contest to escape and assault charges Thursday.
Dixon was already serving 80 to 140 year and 70 to 120 year sentences for crimes he committed in 2009, including two first-degree sexual assaults.
Defense attorney Sandy Pollack asked the judge to take his previous sentences into consideration. However, Lancaster County District Judge Andrew Jacobsen noted Dixon’s history of violence and sentenced him to serve 30 to 60 years in prison for the escape and 20 years for assaulting two women while trying to hide from authorities.
Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Eric Miller, agreed not to file any additional charges in connection to Dixon’s escape in exchange for the plea.
Miller said Dixon and inmate Timothy Clausen, 52, hid in the back of a laundry cart to escape last year.
Dixon was caught after assaulting a 21-year-old woman and her 61-year-old mother in their apartment. The women told authorities that Dixon allegedly threatened the 21-year-old with a “pretend” gun, which was made of a stick wrapped in a t-shirt.
Miller said when the mother tried to intervene Dixon allegedly hit her in the head and knocked her to the floor.
“It was a very terrifying event for them,” the prosecutor told the judge.
Dixon was later arrested after emerging from a storm sewer drain.
Clausen was caught in Omaha several days after his escape. He’s awaiting trial.
